Why teams look beyond Northpass

A good product that changed hands twice.

Northpass built a real customer-education platform, and plenty of teams still run it happily. What changed is the company around it. Two acquisitions in under two years put the product inside a larger customer-success suite, and a platform transition is when buyers tend to re-open the questions they settled at purchase.

  1. July 2023

    Gainsight acquires Northpass

Gainsight announced a definitive agreement to acquire Northpass, then serving roughly 350 companies, and folded it into its customer-success platform.

  2. After the deal

    Northpass becomes Gainsight Customer Education

The product was rebranded. The northpass.com material and support articles are still the public documentation for much of it.

  3. April 2025

    Gainsight acquires Skilljar

Gainsight bought a second customer-education LMS, and said it would combine that platform with the functionality it acquired from Northpass.

  4. Today

Two education products under one roof

Third-party catalogs now list Gainsight Customer Education as part of Skilljar. Which platform a given account lands on is a question for Gainsight, not for us.

Which roadmap are we on?

When one vendor owns two LMSs in the same category, the product that keeps investment and the product that gets consolidated are rarely announced on the same day as the deal.

What does renewal look like?

Pricing is quote-based on both education products, so repackaging arrives as a number in a renewal conversation. There is no published list to check it against.

Is the CRM still the point?

The suite this now sits inside is built around Gainsight. If your revenue team runs on HubSpot, the integration you care about is a connector on someone else's roadmap.

The comparison

The seven things a customer-education buyer asks.

Focused on purpose. These are the categories that decide the evaluation; the section under the table is everything that never gets a row.

CategoryHubLMS CloudNorthpass (Gainsight Customer Education)
Course authoringA three-pane visual editor with autosave, undo and click-to-edit text on the canvas. 18 block types, including flashcards, sorting exercises, process walkthroughs and gated continue buttons. Auto-graded quizzes with pass thresholds you set, timed exams, open-ended questions with a grading queue. The HubLMS AI agent drafts a full course from up to 64,000 characters of your own source material, lesson by lesson, and nothing publishes without your approval.A course and syllabus builder with quizzes, assignments, certificates and learning paths, plus a course marketplace. Public documentation does not describe AI course generation.
HubSpot integration depthTwo-way and native, on every plan. Each enrollment becomes a course record associated with the contact, carrying status, percent complete (partial credit for video and SCORM), exam scores, certificates, membership tier and status, earned credits and training deadlines. Completions and milestones post timeline notes. HubSpot lists enroll and revoke automatically. Membership and program purchases can open deals in a pipeline you choose. Lead-gen submissions land with attribution.A HubSpot marketplace app. Course progress and learning-path progress arrive as custom contact properties, one property per course and one per path, matched to the contact by email address. Course completions, quiz completions (with score) and assignment submissions post as contact timeline events. Progress recorded before the app is installed is not backfilled.
SCORMSCORM 1.2 and 2004 in a first-party runtime: no third-party player, no per-learner fees. Multi-SCO packages are detected and become multi-lesson courses, completion mode is set per lesson, a cmi inspector shows exactly what the package reported for each learner, and a single-package course can launch straight into the content.SCORM packages upload through the media library and play as a SCORM activity in the syllabus; SCORM analytics appear in reporting. Public documentation does not state which SCORM versions are supported.
Learner portal & brandingA white-label portal on your own domain with managed SSL. Your logo, your fonts, and brand colors that get their contrast checked for accessibility automatically. Five interface languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian and Norwegian. Passwordless email codes, recognition of contacts HubSpot already knows, post-purchase claim links, and resume positions that survive a change of device.A branded academy: logo, colors and images, prebuilt themes, and a custom domain. Deeper customization through HTML, CSS and a Liquid template engine.
CommerceSelling runs through your own Stripe account, and we take no platform transaction fee. Hosted checkout, guest purchase with emailed claim links, an embeddable cart drawer with abandoned-cart recovery, memberships and tiers with free trials, promo codes, proration and a self-serve billing portal, and organization seat pools you sell or grant. Not publicly documented
Analytics & CRM reportingA real-time dashboard for enrollments, completion rate, exam pass rate and active learners, per-learner records, and CSV export everywhere. The reporting that compounds happens in the CRM: progress, credits and deadlines are HubSpot properties, so the lists, reports and workflows your team already maintains read training data directly. The same signals mirror to Day.ai for teams who run that instead.Analytics covering course progress, content engagement, assessments, SCORM and certificates, in real time, filterable by group, course and date range, exportable to CSV. CRM-side reporting rides the per-course contact properties and timeline events the HubSpot app writes.
Pricing transparencyPrices are on the pricing page: $179, $459 and $1299 a month, enterprise included. Deep HubSpot sync is included at every tier. Start on a 7-day free trial without talking to anyone. The figures are placeholders while final packaging is settled, and the page says so where it shows them.No public price list. Pricing is quote-based and the motion is demo-led, with no public free trial. Third-party research puts dedicated customer-education platforms in the tens of thousands of dollars a year; treat any specific figure as directional.

Every claim in the Northpass column comes from Gainsight or Northpass material, the HubSpot app marketplace, or third-party research, each recorded with its URL in the page source. Where public documentation does not answer a question, the cell says so. If something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

And that's just the table

Everything that never gets a row.

A comparison table has to stop somewhere, so it stops at the categories both products are shopped on. Below is the rest of what is included, drawn from our own product documentation.

An agent-first platform

  • MCP server with 40+ tools over the Model Context Protocol
  • Connect Claude, ChatGPT, or any MCP-compatible assistant to your workspace
  • A connected assistant can author courses and exams, enroll learners, set pricing and publish
  • Every write it makes is audit-logged, and the guardrails run server-side
  • Agent DevKit: one download configures any coding assistant, and never contains secrets
  • A complete OpenAPI 3.1 REST surface, API keys, per-tenant CORS, rate limits, idempotency
  • Sandbox workspaces with test keys, so an integration is built safely
  • Webhooks: seven events, HMAC-signed, with delivery management in the app

The HubLMS AI agent

  • Drafts a whole course from up to 64,000 characters of your own source material
  • Outline first, for your approval, then every lesson with live per-lesson progress
  • Generate any single block in place, inside the editor
  • Quiz drafts stay flagged until a person approves them
  • Landing-page copy drafting
  • Nothing the agent produces publishes itself

Content you can reuse

  • Borrow a lesson from another course, live: republish the source and the borrower updates
  • Curated courses assembled from lessons the workspace already teaches
  • Programs and pathways with required and optional courses and rolled-up credits
  • Coursera-style landing pages for any program or course, edited section by section
  • First-party video with chapters, captions and a click-to-seek transcript
  • Must-watch gates that tie completion to genuine watch coverage

Compliance, credentials and credits

  • Deadlines on any enrollment or seat, explicit or “due N days after enrollment”
  • Reminder rail at 7 days, 1 day, and a capped weekly overdue cadence, never duplicated
  • Due and overdue fields on CRM contacts, so lists and workflows can act on them
  • Overdue rollups in the admin dashboard, in exports, and in customer-org portals
  • Recertification cycles: a renewal window, exam-first renewal, and a new certificate issued
  • Your own CEU credit types with fractional credits and accreditor lines
  • Multiple credit types per course, shown on courses, catalogs and certificates
  • An append-only earned-credits ledger per learner, synced to the CRM
  • Drag-and-drop certificate designer, and issued certificates pin their design forever
  • Serial numbers and a public verification page on every certificate

Commerce and B2B

  • Your own Stripe account, and zero platform transaction fees at any tier
  • Hosted checkout, guest purchase, emailed claim links, refunds with an access policy you set
  • A 5KB embeddable cart drawer for any website, with abandoned-cart recovery
  • Memberships and tiers: recurring or lifetime, free trials, promo codes, proration
  • A self-serve billing portal, and tier switching your customers do themselves
  • Organization seat pools, tier-scoped, sold or granted: “50 seats of Gold for Acme” is one purchase
  • Customer-org admin portals with seat assignment, spreadsheet invites, exports
  • Lead-gen mode: the course page becomes the form, and the CRM gets the attribution

Live sessions

  • A live lesson type with scheduling, join links, calendar invites and a join window
  • Attendance counts as completion, so a live session earns certificates and credits
  • Provider-verified attendance across Zoom, GoToWebinar and Microsoft Teams
  • Self check-in and manual rosters where a provider cannot verify

Two CRMs, and the plumbing under them

  • Day.ai as a second CRM: people, organizations, properties and timeline context
  • A sync monitor showing every outbound write, with automatic retries
  • Self-healing when a CRM record is deleted, and alerts on dead letters
  • A companion HubSpot CMS theme, so the academy can live inside your website
  • Shared login between that theme and Cloud, with progress flowing back

Access, identity and reach

  • Admin SSO over OIDC or SAML with domain routing and just-in-time provisioning
  • Enforced-SSO mode with owner break-glass protection
  • Per-organization learner SSO: your customer configures their own connection
  • Mandatory DNS-TXT domain verification before an org connection goes live
  • Five portal languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, Norwegian
  • Custom domains with managed SSL, and email from your own domain or SMTP
  • Audit logs on every mutation, and strict tenant isolation on every query
  • Isolated workspaces with a switcher, for agencies running several

Two of these are unusual beyond Northpass. Our own field map, validated in July 2026 across nine platforms from Thinkific to Docebo, found no competitor shipping an agent/MCP surface at all, and none syncing to a second CRM.

This list is what HubLMS Cloud includes, not a claim about what Northpass lacks. Sourced comparisons live in the table above.

Where the difference shows

One contact record, every course they have taken.

Course records, not one property per course. Every enrollment becomes a record associated with the contact, carrying status, percent complete, exam scores, certificates, membership tier, earned credits and any deadline. Twenty courses stay twenty records.

Your lists already know how to read it. HubSpot lists enroll and revoke automatically, membership purchases can open deals in a pipeline you choose, and completions post timeline notes where your team already looks.

Day.ai too. The same learning signals mirror onto Day.ai people and organizations, for teams who run that instead.

Comparable HubSpot-native sync elsewhere starts around $299 a month behind a tier gate, or lives inside contracts of $15K to $100K a year that begin with a call. Northpass and Skilljar both publish no price list. We publish ours, enterprise included.

Switching

We move it with you.

Migration off Northpass is a service we run, not a button you press. A person on our side does the extraction and the mapping, you review a migration report, and nothing publishes until you say so.

What carries

Content, people and history. Courses and lessons arrive as editable courses in our block types. Learners arrive as members, email-keyed. Enrollments and transcripts arrive as adopted progress, so a completed course reads as completed and nobody retakes anything. Learning paths become programs. Issued certificates arrive as records with the original who, what and when intact.

What gets rebuilt

The visual theme and any platform-specific widgets. Northpass themes are HTML, CSS and Liquid against their template engine, and that does not port; your academy gets rebuilt in ours, on your domain, with your brand. SCORM is the easy case: any course you authored as SCORM imports through our existing pipeline untouched.

How it runs

Every object that cannot be mapped lands in the migration report with a reason, never silently dropped. Re-running is safe: source ids are stamped, so a second pass updates the objects it created the first time. A self-serve importer is planned; until it ships, this is white-glove and we say so.

Questions

Switching questions, answered.

Is HubLMS Cloud a drop-in replacement for Northpass?

For the work a customer academy does, yes: courses and lessons, learning paths, quizzes and exams, certificates, a branded portal on your own domain, SCORM, and reporting. It is not a copy of Northpass, and two things differ enough to plan around. Your theme gets rebuilt rather than imported, because their templates are Liquid against their engine. And the CRM side is deeper here, which usually means retiring per-course contact properties in favor of course records your existing lists and workflows can filter on.

What happens to our courses, learners and completion history?

Content, people and history carry. Courses and lessons arrive as editable courses, learners arrive as members keyed by email, and enrollments and transcripts arrive as adopted progress, so a learner who finished a course in Northpass reads as finished here and is never asked to retake it. Learning paths become programs. Issued certificates arrive as records with the original who, what and when. Migration is white-glove today: we run it, you review a report naming every object that could not be mapped and why, and nothing publishes until you approve it.

Northpass already integrates with HubSpot. What is different here?

Shape and depth. Their app writes course progress and learning-path progress as custom contact properties, one per course and one per path, and posts completion, quiz and assignment events to the contact timeline; progress from before the install is not backfilled. Ours writes a course record associated with the contact for every enrollment, carrying status, percent complete, exam scores, certificates, membership tier, earned credits and deadlines, plus timeline notes on milestones. HubSpot lists drive enrollment and revocation in both directions, and membership purchases can open deals in a pipeline you pick. The practical difference is that reporting on twenty courses does not mean twenty new contact properties.

Will the SCORM library we built in Northpass still work?

Yes. Any course you authored as SCORM imports through our pipeline as it is, and plays in a first-party runtime that supports SCORM 1.2 and 2004 with no per-learner fees and no third-party player. Multi-SCO packages are detected and become multi-lesson courses, completion mode is set per lesson, and a cmi inspector shows admins exactly what the package reported for each learner.

How does the pricing actually compare?

We publish three monthly prices, enterprise included, and deep HubSpot sync is in every one of them. Northpass and Skilljar publish no price list; both are quoted, and the motion starts with a demo. That makes a like-for-like number impossible to print here in good faith, so we print ours and let you compare it to whatever you are quoted. One caveat we would rather state than bury: our figures are placeholders while final packaging is settled, and the pricing page marks them as such.

Is there really a free trial?

Seven days, self-serve, no call. That is the product's actual trial length, which is why the button says it. You get a workspace, the course builder, the AI agent's starter allowance, and the HubSpot connection, so the thing you are evaluating is the thing you would buy.

Can we keep the academy inside our own HubSpot website?

Yes, with the companion HubSpot CMS theme. It shares login with Cloud, embeds the SCORM player, and sends progress back to Cloud and to the CRM, so the learner never leaves your site and the records still land where your team reads them. The hosted portal on your own subdomain and a fully headless build on our API are the other two ways to run it.

This comparison is dated. What if it is wrong?

The Northpass column was checked in July 2026 against public material, and every claim in it is recorded in the page source with the URL it came from, so anyone can re-check it. Gainsight has moved this product twice since 2023 and will keep changing it, and where public documentation did not answer a question we left the cell saying exactly that. If a cell is out of date or wrong, write to us and we will fix it.

See it against your own CRM.

Seven days, self-serve, no call. Bring one course and a HubSpot sandbox, and you will know by day two.
